Sanitation is critical for rural communities. Living without it can have severe detrimental health, social and economic impacts on individuals, families and communities.
In Cambodia, more than 50% of people live without access to a decent toilet, according to Wateraid. Also UNICEF Country Programme 2016-2018 reported that about 50% of people still practice open defecation.
On top of that, poverty and a lack of understanding and education about the importance of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) has left people living in unsanitary and unhealthy conditions, especially in rural areas.
According to a 2008 study from the World Bank’s Water and Sanitation Programme, about 10,000 people die per year due to diarrhea and other diseases caused by poor sanitation in Cambodia.
To solve this problem, Cambodia’s government has set National Strategy for Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene 2011-2025 which is to improve the accessibility to water supplies and improve sanitation for all people living in rural areas by 2025.
Recognizing the importance of this issue, and aligning with national goals, Mekong Homes contributes to ending sanitation problems in rural Cambodia by providing homes with a built-in sanitation system suited in Cambodia’s rural areas. This relatively simple home addition directly improves living conditions and improves lives.
Mekong Homes has three types: MH 661, MH 662 and MH 962, all of which come with a bathroom and sewage system. These allow families to live more comfortably and reduce the risk sickness and disease caused by poor sanitation. The use of proper toilets also contributes to positive cultural change away from open defecation.
With a vision to create and build a better living for rural communities, Mekong Homes’ goal is to uplift the living standards of rural families through the construction of affordable houses that come with quality, beauty, comfort and sustainability. With more than 100 houses built already, positive impacts are being seen across Cambodia, especially in terms of improved sanitation.
